3 ways to create a work culture that brings out the best in employees - Ted Talk
In this Ted Talk, Chris White explains 3 different ways that a work culture can be created to bring out the full potential in employees. The first point he touches on is unblocking communication. Many individuals in the workplace may feel as if their opinions or ideas are not heard or respected by their peers. This can result in employees walking away from their employer because when individuals don't feel valued in their workplace, they can become unmotivated because they feel as what they have to say doesn't matter to the rest of the group. This can negatively affect the company as if an employee has no motivation to complete a certain task, the company may suffer the consequences of the lack of work from certain individuals. To avoid this in the future, workplaces should be encouraging their employees to speak up with their ideas and even if it is not the idea they are looking for, at least the employee is able to voice their opinion and feel valued. The second point he talks about is how managers have to proactively unblock the organization. This can be done by inviting their employees to share ideas or by asking questions to their employees regarding how things are operating in the workplace. When an organization does not make their employees feel like they belong, they run into the risk of employees walking out on the spot. The last point he talks about is the three choices that employees have when deciding their future in a company. The first choice is if employees feel that they do not agree with the terms of a company they could leave that company and look for one that actually values their employees. The second option is to stay with the company and when issues arise, bring it to the attention of a manager. This can allow the employee to stick it out for a bit longer to see if anything changes within the workplace. The third and final option is disagreeing with your peers in hopes to learn collectively from it, which means that the team can tackle an issue together even though everyone may not be on the same page.
This applies to me personally as in my previous work experience I have been in the position where I feel as if my opinions or ideas are not valued by others. Although, there are other times where I have felt the opposite, where my peers would listen to what I have to say and even if they do not agree with what I said, I at least had an opportunity to voice my opinion which made me feel respected among this group. I agree with the point he made in this Ted Talk when he was talking about employees becoming unmotivated when they feel excluded, because this is very noticeable whether it is in school or at work.
